PrestoSpace

PrestoSpace logoIn the PrestoSpace project we worked with prestigious broadcast and film archives, including BBC, INA, RAI, ORF and B&G on the digitisation, storage and restoration of audiovisual assets. This included:

  • Strategies, processes and cost models for business planning of audiovisual digitisation and storage projects that allow the trade-offs between cost, quality, accessibility and loss to be explored in a systematic way.
  • Analysis of large-scale video tape transfer projects conducted by major broadcasters. We have produced guidelines and lookup tables that provide archive managers and transfer operators with information on what tape playability problems to expect.
  • Software tools that apply distributed computing and workflow techniques to achieve high throughput video restoration and a management tool to integrate audio and video restoration activities into a single process.

Our work in PrestoSpace has given us a good understanding of the pressing issues of digital preservation of AV material in Europe’s archives (media degradation, technical obsolescence, lack of awareness) as well as the cost, effort and strategies involved in transferring assets into digital form and storing them for long periods of time in digital mass storage systems.
