Join a creative, innovative and friendly team at the IT Innovation Centre, part of the Department of Electronics and Computer Science. Based on the University of Southampton Science Park, we have an international reputation for advancing a wide range of information technologies and enabling their adoption in industry and commerce. Current work includes big data, information security, and human-centric computing & information sciences, applied in sectors including creative industries, cultural heritage, e-democracy, environment, healthcare and transport.

Focused on a professional approach to software development in an agile team environment, our Research Engineers can become involved in all aspects of the project lifecycle, including requirements analysis, architecture, documentation, and demonstrating proofs of concept.


A creative, innovative thinker with outstanding problem-solving skills, and the ability to learn quickly and adapt to new challenges. With a keen interest in new and emerging technologies, you are passionate about innovation and excited by the idea of bringing research closer to market. Your excellent written and oral communication enables you to present ideas clearly and effectively to colleagues, project partners and clients.

With a degree and possibly a post-graduate qualification in computer science or a related discipline, you have excellent software development skills, and you recognise the importance of good software engineering to create robust and usable software. Through employment or internship, you have commercial and/or academic experience of applying IT-based research to real-world problems.

You have expertise in some or all of Java, Python, C++ and R. You have skills and experience in distributed systems and in one or more of:

  • data analysis, data modelling and SQL/NoSQL databases;
  • semantic languages for knowledge representation and reasoning (e.g. OWL, SPARQL and RDF);
  • natural language processing;
  • information security or risk management;
  • big data systems (e.g. Storm, Spark, Hadoop, Hive and HBase);
  • web applications and RESTful service development.

The IT Innovation Centre

The IT Innovation Centre is an applied research centre specialising in the advancement of innovative information technologies and their deployment in industry and commerce. We work at the forefront of emerging technology, taking cutting-edge research and using it in innovative ways to help solve the big societal challenges that we face in the world today.

We have teams working on secure systems, risk management, cyber security, crisis management, decision support, big data, information discovery, internet of things, social media analysis and social behaviour in complex human machine networks. This range of expertise is applied across industry sectors as diverse as health, media, e-government, oil & gas exploration, marine systems, education, transport and security.

Much of our work is performed within collaborative projects at both national and international level, working with researchers, industry and technology users in a spirit of partnership, developing new ideas and applications that draw on and develop our broad technical expertise.

Our work is made widely available through practical demonstrators, proof-of-principle software systems, publications and technical reports.

Part of the School of Electronics and Computer Science at the University of Southampton, we are based at the Southampton Science Park, 4 miles north of Southampton city centre.
