FITMAN

According to the 2010 EC Competitiveness Report, manufacturing is still the driving force of Europe's economy, contributing over € 6553 billion in GDP and providing more than 30 million jobs. It covers more than 25 different industrial sectors, largely dominated by SMEs, and generates annually over € 1535 billion (42%) of value-added services.

The mission of the FITMAN (Future Internet Technologies for MANufacturing industries) project was to provide the FI-PPP with a set of industry-led trials in Smart, Digital and Virtual Factories of the Future use cases. These tested and assessed the suitability, openness and flexibility of Future Internet technologies.

Smart Manufacturing

Project Outcomes

The FITMAN project delivered:

  • a generic Future Internet platform for manufacturing industries;
  • a generic and flexible framework for verification and validation of trials, encompassing concepts, methods and tools for technical and business assessments;
  • open-to-all support for Phase 3 of the FI-PPP (Expansion of Use Cases), providing access to FITMAN reports and prototypes;
  • three specific Future Internet platforms for Smart, Digital and Virtual Factories;
  • eleven trial platforms as instantiations of the generic and specific platforms, for industry-driven multi-sectorial trials; and
  • eleven trials, deploying the platforms in realistic Smart-Digital-Virtual factories and business cases.
